The bulk of the Second Engineer’s job surrounds the day to day running of the engine room machinery. They report to the first engineer and work as their chief assistant supervising the rest of the engine maintenance team and training the third and fourth engineering officers. Another part of the 2nd engineer’s job is to oversee the engines preparations for arrival and departure into port, as well as supervising any major overhauls.
As a senior maritime engineer, your job could take you all over the world in merchant vessels varying from cargo ships and large vessels, to passenger cruise liners and superyachts. This means that a job in maritime engineering will open a new world of possibilities to experience whilst working and traveling at the same time.
