Why employment longevity is so important

How to achieve employment longevity? At Viking Crew, we are often asked by our yacht clients for CVs of crew that have proven longevity in their past positions.  It is commonplace for them to request at the very minimum, 1 years’ experience onboard the same yacht, although at times, 2-3 years’ experience is desired.

Your CV is the first impression that a potential employer will have of you, and it needs to make an impact in such a competitive industry as yachting. Every Captain, Owners Rep and Management Company want a professional that is dedicated to stay onboard for a significant time.

Therefore, having proven this in past positions will set you apart from many other candidates that might have potentially moved from yacht to yacht in a short period of time.

How to gain longevity?

Gaining employment longevity is not just about finding a position that matches your skills and experience, it is also about securing a position that provides a great all-round package.

We are often given a variety of reasons for crew leaving their past roles and we understand that some circumstances can be out of the crew members hands, however, there are some reasons that can be avoided from the start.

In interviews, try to get as much information as possible about the yacht, its cruising patterns, the crew and dynamics onboard.  For more interview tips, please see our blog about how to start your career in yachting.

To determine whether the yacht is going be a good fit, it is good to think about the following: -

• The career progression available on the yacht; Is this just a side-step or will there be opportunities to step up
• How long have the current crew been onboard, what is their longevity like, and will there be any movement in the team?
• The itinerary; will it be right for you? Do you prefer to be based somewhere, or near your family? Owner’s plans change, are you flexible enough for what this yacht has to offer?
• Crew dynamic onboard; how do the current crew spend their down time? Do you have similar interests?
• Package; is the salary, benefits and leave in line with what you are looking for?

By gaining the above information prior to joining a yacht will determine whether it will be the right fit for you. Then, in turn, this will lead to a long-term position onboard and set your CV in good stead for future roles within the industry.
