How to get a great job on a Yacht? Here’s our advice.

Ever wondered how to get a job on a yacht? Working onboard a yacht is an extremely rewarding experience. You will meet people from all over the world whilst visiting beautiful destinations. If you are interested in changing your career to work on a yacht, but don’t quite know which jobs are available onboard, we are here to help you!

First of all, you will need to decide which department you would like to get a job within. Onboard a Yacht, there is a Deck, Engine and Interior department.

Deck Team: is the team onboard that safely navigate (drive) the yacht
Engine Team: is the team on board that keep the yacht engines running and well maintained
Interior Team: is the team onboard that serve the guests and look after the housekeeping. This includes Chefs who are responsible for providing the food.

Secondly, you will need to check whether you have the right training and qualifications for the position you would like to apply for. You can find out more about all of the required training you’ll need here.

If you are interested in the Deck department, you may need additional courses such as Fast Rescue Boat, Power Boat level 2, VHF radio etc.

For the Engine department, you may want to consider the MCA Approved AEC part 1 & 2 which provides general care and maintenance to keep engines on smaller vessels in good operational order.

When starting a career in the Interior department, even if you already come from the hospitality sector shoreside, you should bear in mind that working on a yacht can be very different.
